Mental Health Counselor

Headshot of Aaksha Shah

About me

My name is Aaksha and I am a Mental Health counselor, practicing under a limited permit. I graduated with my Masters in counseling from Hofstra University and have experience working with individuals in an inpatient as well as outpatient setting.

My specialties

I work with individuals and couples navigating a varying range of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, life challenges and interpersonal relationship distress. I also have experience supporting individuals living with mood disorders and personality disorders, where I aim to bring steadiness, structure, and a nonjudgmental presence to work that can feel overwhelming.

I understand that life transitions can be some of the most difficult seasons we face. Whether you are starting a new chapter, adjusting to a change in your relationships or career, or simply finding yourself in an unfamiliar stage of life, I offer a safe and supportive space to explore what you're feeling and develop the skills to move through it with more confidence.

What Inspired me to be a therapist

I have always been drawn to understanding why we think, feel, and act the way we do. The moment someone begins to make sense of their own patterns—and realizes they have the power to change them—is one of the most meaningful things I get to witness. I believe everyone deserves a space where they feel truly heard, without judgment. I have seen how much can shift when someone feels understood and supported through a difficult season. That belief is what led me to this work—to walk alongside people through their hardest moments and help them discover the strength they already carry within them.

My approach

My approach blends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic work. Through CBT, we identify the thoughts and behaviors that keep you feeling stuck and build concrete, practical strategies you can use in daily life. DBT adds skills for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, and strengthening your relationships—tools that can be especially grounding during difficult moments. Through a psychodynamic lens, we explore the deeper patterns, relationships, and past experiences that shape how you think and feel today. Together, these approaches help create change that is both immediate and lasting. Above all, my work is client-centered and tailored to you—I aim to provide a warm, collaborative environment where you feel understood and equipped to grow.

When I’m not working, I like to

Spend time with family and friends, read a gripping book, travel or try different coffee shops.
